Master the Fundamentals
As a beginner, focus on mastering the fundamental elements of golf:
Grip: Learn the correct way to grip the club. Mastering how to hold the club correctly is fundamental to a successful swing. The grip affects control and power in every shot.
Stance: Position your feet shoulder-width apart with a slight knee bend. Your body alignment should be towards your target. Proper alignment and posture contribute to consistency and power in your shots.
Swing Mechanics: Practice a smooth, controlled swing. Understanding the components of a good swing—backswing, downswing and follow-through—is key to hitting the ball effectively.
Short Game Techniques: Developing skills in putting, chipping and pitching is essential for scoring well on the course. Spend ample time on the putting green. Practice distance control and aiming for accuracy in your putts.
Understand Golf Etiquette
Golf has a rich tradition of etiquette that all players should respect. Familiarise yourself with basic rules such as:
· Taking turns and keeping quiet during others’ shots
· Repairing divots and ball marks on greens
· Maintaining a steady pace of play to keep the game enjoyable for all players
Respecting golf etiquette enhances the overall experience on the course and promotes sportsmanship among players.
Invest in Essential Gear
You don’t need a full set of clubs to get started. Begin with a basic set that includes:
· A driver
· A putter
· A selection of irons (e.g., 5-iron, 7-iron, 9-iron)
As you progress and gain experience, you can expand your club collection to include more specialised clubs like wedges and hybrids. Additionally, invest in comfortable golf shoes and attire suitable for the course and weather conditions. You can buy everything you need for both kids and adults at our on-site pro shop.

Learn the Lingo
Golf comes with its own unique language. From birdies to bogeys, understanding golf lingo is essential for navigating the course and communicating with fellow golfers. So, let's break down some key terms every beginner should know:
Par: Par is the standard score for a particular hole, representing the number of strokes an expert golfer is expected to take to complete it. A par-3 hole typically requires three strokes, a par-4 hole four strokes and a par-5 hole five strokes.
Birdie: When a golfer completes a hole in one stroke less than par, it's called a birdie. For example, if you sink the ball in four strokes on a par-5 hole, you've made a birdie.
Bogey: On the flip side, a bogey occurs when a golfer completes a hole in one stroke more than par. So, if you take six strokes to finish a par-5 hole, you've made a bogey.
Rough: The rough refers to the longer grass and other vegetation that borders the fairway. Shots that land in the rough can make it more challenging to hit the ball cleanly and accurately.
Handicap: A handicap is a measure of a golfer's playing ability, used to level the playing field in competitions. The higher the handicap, the poorer the golfer's ability relative to a scratch golfer.

Learning golf lingo takes time, so don't feel overwhelmed if you don't grasp everything at once. As you spend more time on the course, you'll become increasingly familiar with these terms and develop a deeper understanding of the game.
