Taylor And Colt Designed Course

Did you know that Came Down was rated one of Golf Monthly’s Hidden Gems?

Our 18-hole downland chalk course is open seven days a week, year-round, providing optimal playability regardless of season. Maintained to the highest standards by our skilled greenkeepers, the course features immaculate greens, a putting green for practise, and breathtaking panoramic views of the Dorset countryside. The course layout offers a rewarding challenge for golfers of all skill levels, with rolling fairways and natural contours.

Birthplace of the Ryder Cup

Came Down Golf Club’s rich history is uniquely intertwined with one of the sport’s greatest traditions – the Ryder Cup. Samuel Ryder, passionate golfer and businessman, was a member of Came Down and frequently played here with professional golfer Ernest Whitcombe. Ryder was inspired to create the Ryder Cup after discussing the disparities between British and American golfers. In 1926, he organised a match between his coach, Abe Mitchell, and Reg Whitcombe at Came Down, leading to the idea of a competition between the best British and American professionals. Ryder provided the trophy, marking Came Down as the birthplace of this iconic tournament.

Walking the fairways at Came Down, you’re not just playing golf; you’re stepping into a piece of golfing history. The club’s heritage as birthplace of the Ryder Cup adds a unique sense of prestige, giving society visitors a taste of the legacy that has made Came Down one of Dorset’s most celebrated courses.

Cosy Clubhouse

Step into our clubhouse after your round for stunning views of Dorchester and the sun setting below the rolling hills. Our Head Chef, Kevin, ensures that our menu features fresh, locally sourced ingredients with daily specials alongside classic golfers’ favourites, including sandwiches, wraps, all-day breakfasts, burgers and cakes. We run a fully licensed bar, serving a selection of draught beers as well as a tempting wine list, a selection of gins, and a range of non-alcoholic beverages.

The clubhouse also hosts regular social events which are a great way to get to know the local golfing community, so follow our social media to stay updated on all our gatherings!

Make The Most of Your Visit

Our course is nestled between Dorchester and Weymouth, meaning you’re perfectly placed to enjoy the surrounding attractions during your visit. In Weymouth, stroll along the beautiful sandy beach or discover the dramatic coastline of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its fossil-rich cliffs and scenic views. The bustling Weymouth Harbour is a fantastic spot to enjoy fresh seafood, and at Nothe Fort you can discover more about the area’s fascinating military history.

Dorchester, just a short drive away, is a charming market town with a rich history, plenty of independent shops and cafés, and attractions to suit a variety of interests. Explore the Dorset Museum to learn about the region's archaeology, natural history and art, or visit nearby Max Gate, the former home of renowned author Thomas Hardy. For something a bit different, the Tutankhamun Exhibition offers an immersive experience into ancient Egypt, and the award-winning Borough Gardens provide a peaceful setting for a relaxed afternoon.
