9 ways playing golf can benefit your child

Have you considered introducing your child or children to the world of golf? With a huge range of mental, physical and social benefits, golf is the perfect sport for kids to play individually, with friends or enjoy as a family day out.

Here at Came Down, we offer kids golf lessons and junior membership.

Here’s just nine ways that playing golf can benefit kids:

1.     Playing golf outside is a great way for them to get into the fresh air, away from screens and enjoy the outdoors in a vast, green open space.

2.     If an average 18-hole round is walked, you can cover between four and five miles on foot, burning approximately 1,500 calories in the process. Golf is a fantastic physical activity which includes walking to each hole, carrying the golf bag which builds strength and endurance and playing itself which builds muscle. The golf swing is one of the few athletic movements that engages every major muscle group in the body. Swinging the club and hitting the ball also helps to develop hand-eye coordination which is important for other activities.

3.     Golf enables children to spend more time with family or friends and build relationships and social skills. Golf courses are great places for kids to make new friends. Playing as a family allows parents to spend quality time bonding with their children whilst exercising and learning new skills.

4.     Golf is an ideal sport for teaching respect, discipline and etiquette because there are many unspoken rules to learn and players need to be their own referee. Children will learn that it’s important to stay calm, polite and not get frustrated if the game doesn’t go their way.

5.     Regardless of strength, speed, physical stature or fitness level, golf is suitable for anyone. Although they can play alongside others, it’s a sport that suits kids who feel pressured playing team sports as they can grow their skills as an individual player instead. The handicap system allows players to compete at different levels.

6.     Learning how to play golf takes time and practice. In doing so, children will become more patient, persistent, resilient and build confidence.

7.     Golf is relatively low risk compared to other sports as there’s no physical contact and it’s gentle with little chance of major injury.

8.     It’s good fun and rewarding!

9.     Other benefits include cognitive development, improved vision and increased attention span.
