Nestled between Dorset’s historic county town, Dorchester, and the coastal resort of Weymouth, Came Down Golf Club is a course rich in history and camaraderie. As the birthplace of the first Ryder Cup team, our club has a proud heritage and we continue to foster a welcoming and inclusive golfing community with a host of competitions and trophies up for grabs each year.

As you step onto the 18-hole course, the panoramic views of the Dorset countryside will take your breath away. Surrounded by rolling hills, lush greenery and the rugged Jurassic Coast in the distance, the setting is unbeatable. The course is challenging but playable for all golfers, making every round enjoyable and rewarding.
Our golfing season runs from October to September each year, with the highly anticipated Masters event marking the transition between seasons. Below is an overview of the men’s competitions and trophies that take place throughout the year.

Men’s Competitions and Trophies
The Masters (Season Finale & Prize Giving)
An 18-hole stableford, played from the white tees with a maximum handicap of 36. Qualification is based on performance in club events throughout the season with lifetime exemptions for past winners. Players compete for the title of Champion Golfer, followed by an evening dinner and prize presentation.
Weymouth Cup (October)
One of our oldest and most highly regarded trophies. Now played under a medal format, qualification is secured through monthly medals and the Club Championship. Played from the white tees with a max handicap of 28, the best net score secures the trophy and the substantial prize fund.
Lewis Holloway Cup (October)
Contested alongside the October Stableford, this perpetual trophy is awarded to the best score from a player receiving 18 strokes or less.
RBL Poppy Appeal (October)
A pairs 4BBB stableford competition, max handicap 28, with half of the entry fees donated to the Poppy Appeal.
Turkey Trot (December)
A festive three-player stableford bowmaker event, where the best two scores on each hole contribute to the team total.
Bogey Cup (April)
A matchplay-style competition against the course, where players aim for net birdies or better to score positive points. The player with the best overall +/- score wins.
La Liga (May–August)
A 10-hole stableford competition played over 15 Wednesday evenings, starting on the first Wednesday in May. The maximum handicap is 18 and the trophy is awarded to the player with the best aggregate six-score total.
Dorchester Challenge Bowl (May)
Contested alongside the May Medal, this trophy is awarded to the best net medal score by a player receiving 18 strokes or less.
Iron Duke Salver (May)
A stableford competition played alongside the May Stableford. The best stableford score by a player with 18 strokes or less wins the salver.
SW King Salver (June)
A pairs 4BBB stableford event with a maximum handicap of 18, typically played on a Saturday. The best score on each hole counts towards the team total.
Club Championship (June)
A 36-hole tournament towards the end of June, taking place across two consecutive days or weekends. The Jack Birch Salver is awarded for the best gross score, while the Leslie Dare Cup goes to the best net score (max handicap: 24). The final round features a leader group playing together, adding to the drama.
Summer Knockouts (April–September)
All knockouts carry a maximum of permitted course handicap of 18.
Lady Christian Martin Salver – Singles, handicap knockout
Hambro Cup – Singles, handicap knockout
Scratch Cup – Singles, scratch knockout
Ilchester Cup – Pairs, foursomes knockout
President’s Salver – Pairs, fourball better-ball knockout
Waggler’s Trophy – Singles, handicap knockout (handicaps 19–28)
William Watkins Trophy (Winter)
A singles knockout event running through the winter months. Max handicap: 18.
Fred May Trophy
Awarded to the best aggregate score over four medal rounds throughout the season, including one winter round.
Gerry Eley Scratch Salver
Presented to the player with the best gross score in a summer medal round (October-September).
Monthly Competitions
Monthly Medal – played on the first Saturday (Jan–June) and third Sunday (July–Dec). Three handicap divisions: 12 and below, 13–18, 19–28.
Monthly Stableford – played on the third Sunday (Jan–June) and first Saturday (July–Dec). Three handicap divisions: 12 and below, 13–18, 19–36.
Mid-Week Stableford – typically played on the third Thursday of each month. Three handicap divisions: 12 and below, 13–18, 19–36.
Pro’s Day / Captain’s Day / President’s Day
Three annual events, usually held in May, July and September. Formats vary but they tend to be team events which are very popular and well supported. Sign up early!
