Course Open. 1 Temporary Green. No hire buggies (updated 20 February at 09:10)

With summer fully underway I trust that you are having a good season and enjoying your golf.

I am sure you will all join me in congratulating Matt Walker on a fantastic achievement on winning the Dorset County Championships.  Matt is the first Came Down member in 32 years to be crowned 'County Champion', we wish him every success in the Champion of Champions event taking place later this year.

On May 18th Came Down hosted a team from HMS Portland for the inaugural 'Portland Challenge', our Club President Charles Foster graciously accepted the winners trophy on behalf of the Came Down team.   It is hoped that the 'Portland Challenge' becomes a regular event between HMS Portland and ourselves.  During the evening Charles and I were proud to accept the Ship's Crest on behalf of the Club and to present HMS Portland with Affiliate Membership of Came Down along with a replica of the new Challenge Trophy.  The ship is currently away on a nine month deployment and we wish them a successful and safe tour of duty and look forward to the next round.

The 3rd of July saw a welcome return, after eight years, of the Came Down Mixed Open,  with 28 teams taking part and players attending from as far away as Burhill Golf Club, Surrey.  The day was a great success, to be repeated next year, many thanks to Martin and Mary Crampton and their support team for organising the event.

The Came Down calendar is full of competitions, running across all club sections and the annual knock out competitions are now reaching their semi-final and final stages.  Whilst most competitions go without a hitch the 'weather gods' still do their best to thwart us.  Thank you for your patience and support during Captain's Weekend, the Saturday Mixed saw fantastic weather, however due to fog the Sunday Men's event unusually saw the 2nd Tee being used as the delayed starting point with prayers finally being answered, after the sacrifice of numerous hotdogs and beef burgers!  The event was concluded in what can best be described as 'testing conditions' with less than 15% of the field scoring more than 30 points.  Thank you to all of you that made the weekend a great success, raising money towards the Captain's Charity, and congratulations to all of the winners.

Well done to the perseverance of the senior section, who managed to complete their Senior Club Championship at the third attempt.   Not to be outdone, the 'weather gods'  sent fog and rain to frustrate the Seniors Open with the competition being called off after most of the field had started.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that supported the Captain's Summer Dance, held at the Nation Sailing Academy, Portland.  I think it is fair to say that a great night was had by all,  dancing to 'Replay' into the late hours and an amazing £1000 being raised for charity.

This summer has seen prolific grass growth which has been hard to keep up with, a common comment across all golf clubs, and yet again I think we owe a huge vote of thanks to Derek and his team who have managed to maintain the course in fantastic condition.

I trust that you are still enjoying 'Nick's tips' and putting them into practice to improve your game. If you would like to see any specific issue covered please let Nick know.  It is our intention to publish all of  'Nick's tips' in a pocket notebook at the end of the year, a stocking filler for a small donation to charity.

Remembering that your committee members (all committees) are all volunteers, they continue to work hard to ensure that the experience offered to members and visitors is a positively memorable one.  A number of improvements are planned over the coming months, a hedge has been planted that will eventually screen the first tee from the car park.  A programme to replace the club house carpet, front windows and front facade has already commenced.  We continue to consider ways by which we can attract new members and have recently successfully introduced taster and twilight memberships, keep your ears tuned to our Wessex FM advertising!
On Saturday August 6th, the Club is pleased to present a musical evening with NINA GARCIA and MIKE DENHAM providing entertainment for the evening. Tickets are £3.00 pp and are numbered so also act as a raffle ticket, with some great prizes on offer.  Any money raised on the evening will be donated to the `WELDMAR CHARITY'.  There will be no formal catering but the kitchen and restaurant will be open until 9.00 pm. (See website for full details)

On Saturday 20th August we will be hosting a 'family fun day'.  The 2016 Ryder Cup takes place from September 30th to October 2nd and we will shortly be advertising our unique association with the Ryder Cup in an effort to attract new members.

A number of competitions including the Club Championships are attracting low entries and others such as the Weymouth Cup have been cancelled due to less than ten entries.  The Captain's Committee are considering the format and timing of various competitions in an attempt to increase participation.

At long last, and huge thanks to Hugh Lawes, we have reintroduced proactive Juniors golf to the Club.  Hugh and Nick have introduced a weekly junior competition throughout August and are in the process of developing a youth programme.  Anyone wishing to offer assistance please contact Hugh, Nick or our Manager Matt.  Peter Fry (Author of 'Samuel Ryder - The Man Behind the Ryder Cup') has kindly offered to donate £5 from every book sale toward junior golf at Came Down, books will be available at £10 from the Club and in the Pro-shop (Peter has also offered to sign any book sold).

The last of the Friday evening ten hole 'shot gun start' fun team events takes place from 17:30 on the 19th of August followed by an informal prize giving and the odd drink or two!  Watch out for the competition entry sheet on the Captain's notice board.

Trusting you have an enjoyable and successful summer season.

Club Captain
